Fireplace screens are some of the most useful and beautiful fireplace accessories available and can often include fire tools like a poker, tongs and clamps as a part of the fire-screen design. A fireplace is very often the focal point of any room it graces and the gentle warmth of the fireplace, flickering light and aromatic smoke are part of the attraction. However, gas log wood burning fireplaces also house an open flame and certain safety precautions are necessary to keep sparks contained within the fireplace and to keep young fingers and inquisitive pets safely away from heat. Fireplace screens can serve as spark arrestors for the wood burning fireplace and as decorative items or they can help protect a hearth floor area from rolling logs moving around as flames burn off a wood stack in the case of sturdier types of screens. Most screens are made of metal such as brass or more commonly wrought iron or steel. Since fireplace screens are subjected to the full heat of the fireplace they must be made of durable materials.
The first rule for any fire to burn in an efficient way, is what type of fuel are you burning? For a wood-burning fireplace to burn well you need to burn good quality, dry seasoned wood. When you burn quality seasoned wood the fire will burn cleaner, hotter and increase your fireplace efficiency. You may say I am already using good quality seasoned wood to help my fireplace burn well, but I still want my fireplace to improve its efficiency. There are still several other things that you can do to improve the efficiency of your fireplace another 25% or more. Every and I mean every fireplace should have a glass-door installed on it, if only for safety reasons, installing a glass door is one of the best ways of improving your fireplace efficiency for a very small cost. You might be thinking that if I put glass-doors on my fireplace the heat will stay behind the glass and just go up the chimney. This is not the case, heat from your fireplace will radiate out through the glass even if the glass-doors are closed, so a good way to use your glass-doors is to burn the fireplace with the glass-doors open and the safety screen closed. In this way you have all the beauty and ambience of your fire before you.
Perhaps the most common type of fireplace screen is the mesh spark arrestor made of finely wrought interlinked chains, which are hung from a rod suspended from the lintel inside the fireplace opening. The screens can be drawn shut like a curtain when needed or opened when the fireplace is not in use. While these screens will not stop a rolling log they will protect areas outside the hearth from flying sparks from popping wood sap. One of the greatest advantages to mesh screens is that they require no extra space or braces and do not extend past the flush face of the fireplace. Another very common type of fireplace screen is made of iron, brass or steel and mounts in front of or on the hearth free-standing in front of the firebox. These fireplace screens can be a simple flat screen, might be free standing on leg-brackets and could be the more common three-sided screen. Three-sided screens have a center section that spans the width of the fireplace. The two sides are hinged to turn at a thirty to forty-five degree angle thus holding the screen plum straight up. The fireplace screen can have fireplace tools, candles and all manner of artistic décor built into the design.
Most houses these days aren`t even built with a fireplace in mind. Housing codes in some cities have put a damper on the installation of traditional wood burning fireplaces. Alternative heating sources that don`t require the collection of wood and the cleanup of ash are another reason why fireplace installation in new homes isn`t so popular. But, fireplaces are so beautiful. They are great for hanging around on cold nights when you want to just spend some quality time with your family. The problem is that installing a traditional wood burning fireplace can cost thousands of dollars. It`s actually somewhere above ten thousand. But, there are cost effective solutions to install a fireplace without the traditional wood burning features that cost so much. Most of this work you can do yourself. But if you have no hope of ever being even an amateur construction worker, then any work you might need done won`t be too expensive to outsource to a contractor.
You can now enjoy your clean fireplace for the rest of the season, without worrying about flying dust or ash or about a dangerous creosote fire breaking out in the fireplace. Do not forget to close the flue to prevent any drafts and to keep your firebox free from debris. Decorating your fireplace is a pleasure once it is all clean. The fun part is deciding what you will use. How about creating a fresh look for your fireplace by getting a new fireplace screen? There are so many options out there as far as design and style. Some of my favorites are single panel fireplace screens. With a single panel fireplace screen, you do not need to have much room on your hearth. Because it is a flat fireplace screen, it can sit right up against the firebox and takes up very little precious space. As for the design, how about adding the fresh look of spring with a leaf fireplace screen? If you really love that look, you can even get a matching leaf fireplace tool set and log holder to go with it!
The greatest way to save yourself money is to build a ventless fireplace with a fireplace insert and use gel fuel to make your fire. You can literally put a fireplace anywhere with just these items. Of course, you`ll need wood to build a structure and faux textures for your decorations. But, you can have a fireplace in a matter of days rather than a few weeks. If you want your own design, you can use your imagination to literally take you anywhere. First, decide where you want to put your fireplace. Figure out where the studs are in the wall. You can either locate your fireplace in the wall between the studs or in front of the wall. Build a faux hearth, a surround and even a faux chimney to the ceiling if you want. You won`t have to build it through the roof. It`s just there for looks. Bookshelves on the side are a nice touch. If you build a faux chimney, a flat screen television looks great above the mantel. Now, place your fireplace insert in the fireplace and light your gel fuel. Depending on how much quality and craftsmanship you put in the design of your fireplace, it will look exactly the way you want, completely original and totally functional.
